It has been seven months since we started having to shutter ourselves from the rest of the world. I haven't had to adjust or change too much when it comes to my beauty regime. I've stocked up on some of my favorite beauty products. But, given that we are still quarantining and with the "no returns" policies that many stores started adopting, we look at other ways to keep my products in hand. One way is DIY, do it yourself beauty products. I went online, and of course, this is a category that is BOOMING right now, and why not? Everything is in your kitchen, easily accessible. So I went on the hunt for some of the best DIY home recipes designed to help with your skincare routines. Here are you can try while trying to keep sane or binge-watching your favorite Netflix television show.Oatmeal and Honey Mask

This natural recipe is a great to cleanse skin without irritating it.  This recipe can be used as a scrub to exfoliate your skin, or you can use gauze to make a facial mask.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup of ground or finely chopped oats

1-2 Tbsp. of honey

enough hot water to make a paste

Directions:

  • Mix the ground oats in a bowl with hot water.

  • Drop in the Tbsp of honey after about a minute, and blend it well to the mixture. You want to create a paste that’s easy to slather on your face.

  • If you’ll be using it as a scrub, use circular motions to massage the oatmeal paste on your skin. Massage for about 3-5 minutes and wash off with warm water.

  • For extra moisture use this mixture as a mask. Cleanse your face with soap and water, and dry it off.  Cut holes on a gauze for your eyes, nostrils, and mouth. Apply the paste on your face without getting it near your eyes or lips, and place the gauze over it. Gently press the gauze down. Leave it on for 15 minutes, and remove the paste with warm water.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 egg white

  • 1 tbsp Greek yogurt (Must be unflavored.)

  • 1/2 sliced avocado (Cut up the avocado to make it easier to blend later on.)

  • Hand blender

How To:

  1. Separate the egg white from the yolk, and transfer the egg whites in a medium-sized bowl.

  2. Combine the egg whites, yogurt, and sliced avocado in the bowl.

  3. Finally, blend everything with a hand blender. I wouldn’t recommend a stand blender since this recipe is quite small and may not blend as well with a big blender. Blend until it becomes a homogenous mixture

Pore Mask Skin Care

If you have big and congested pores, then you will love this recipe. In addition to being effective and easy to make, you probably already have the ingredients at home!

Yogurt contains lactic acid, a chemical exfoliator, and will help bring out the gunk in your pores. The gunk will then stick to the egg whites, while avocado will help calm and soothe your skin.

I use this gentle pore mask once every two weeks to keep my pores minimal. You can also use this as a spot treatment, focusing only on the nose and the forehead. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes then wash off with warm water.

Honey Lip Scrub

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp (15mL) honey

  • 1 tsp (5mL) olive oil (or other natural oil)

  • 1 tbsp (15mL) sugar (superfine/caster or brown sugar recommended)

Optional:

  • 1 tsp (5mL) shea butter or coconut oil

  • ⅛ tsp (0.6mL) vanilla extract

For those of you who want to know more about DIY home remedies  for details.

Microwave a spoonful of honey. Start with 1 tbsp (15mL) honey. Microwave it for about 20 seconds, until the honey is mostly liquid. [1] This makes it easy and fast to mix in the sugar.

Stir in a little natural oil. Stir in 1 tsp (5mL) oil to keep your lip scrub smooth and help moisturize your lips. Olive oil, jojoba oil, and almond oil are popular options that keep the lip scrub light.Add a spoonful of sugar. Stir in 2 tsp (10mL) sugar, an exfoliant that scrapes away dead skin. Most people prefer brown sugar, which can be a little softer than white granulated sugar. If you have sensitive or sore lips, use superfine (caster) sugar instead, which has extra-small, gentle grains.

  • Your lips themselves carry very little dead skin. [3] A little exfoliation might help, especially if the skin around your lips is flaky, but moisturizing is often more important. This scrub does both.

  • If all of your sugar dissolves, just add in more until the mixture is a little gritty.

Rub the mixture onto your lips. Dip a clean finger or cotton swab into the scrub, making sure you pick up some sugar grains. Gently rub this over your lips for about 10 seconds. [4] Some of the sugar might dissolve, while other grains will sit on top of your lips.

Leave on for up to two minutes. Exfoliation should only take a few seconds, but the scrub can also moisturize your lips and soothe cracks and sores.

Rinse off with warm water.

  • If you're looking to keep your lips moisturized long-term, apply homemade lip balm after rinsing.

  • Store the rest of the lip scrub. [5]

    • If the honey crystallizes, just place the container in a shallow bowl of hot tap water until the honey melts.

    • Honey is a natural preservative, making this safer than most homemade scrubs. [6] It is much less effective when diluted, so don't expect an oil-heavy recipe to last too long. [7]
