The New Black Vanguard
Photography Between Art and Fashion
By Roberé Lett | Publisher | Style Editor | Organized by Aperture, New York and Curated by Antwaun Sargent
The New Black Vanguard is an epic display of creativity from the Black perspective; this meticulously curated exhibit fuses ART + FASHION sorely missing from the narrative of today’s society that still sees black creatives as others. This retrospective encompasses such wide and varied styles as all great shows should be when bringing together any group of artisans; everyone is an individual, and thus so should their work. Featuring fashion editorials from conceptual to portraiture, the collection of over 100 images is stunning, alluring, and genuinely shows that the Black creative voice is alive and flourishing. This melding of black culture with high fashion is resplendent. Currently hosted at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) until April 17, 2022. If you get the chance to explore these treasures, you will not be disappointed, and the exhibit is accessible to the public at no charge.
