What’s Underneath

How can we care for our skin and make sure that what’s underneath the surface is in great condition. Summer skincare is always at the forefront each season; as the weather gets warmer and our natural excitement of being able to commune with nature peaks, the chance to be outside enjoying the sun on our skin is a must, at least for me. I feel better when the warm rays hit me! Despite all that is going on in the world today, with stress, worry, and anxiety being a big part of how we live, we still need to feel normal; whatever that is? Especially as we fight a global pandemic and social injustices. Not to be a downer, I thought about what we can use to help both our body and state of mind, so I began gathering up information that can do something to elevate our mind, body, and spirit.

MAKEUP ARTIST’S REBOUND

How makeup artists can WIN during the pandemic

BellViso Global has within four short years become the preeminent refuge for all things beauty in Lathrup Village Michigan. To begin this story I must start with the owner, operator Hellen Gooden. Her story is as intriguing as she is; Born in Eritrea a country in Eastern Africa in the capital city of Asmara, one of the most compelling and secretive places on earth. Her parents sent Hellen and her brother to London, England to further their education which fueled her journey into the world of makeup and makeup artistry. Hellen’s first inspirations came from watching and falling in love with the makeup done in Bollywood films and how intricate and beautiful the characters became. Deciding to pursue her passion for cosmetics even though her dad wanted her to be an economist back home in Africa. Gooden knew she was not interested in that career path for herself and graciously declined. After studying her craft, in 2009 Hellen along with family members Emanuel & Elilta Ghebreyesus launched the first iteration of BellViso Global - which by the way means “A beautiful Face is Global” in Italian. Gooden became one of the first team members when MAC Cosmetics launched at Harvey Nichols luxury department store in London, England.

Opportunities to participate in London Fashion Weeks and working with mega-companies gave her the confidence and self-assurance to approach the Estee Lauder company to allow her to host airbrush makeup training courses within the MAC Cosmetics facilities. From London, fate would land her in an unlikely place - here in Michigan. The success of BellViso led to her receiving another offer with MAC Cosmetics but this time in Dubai, the position was there for the taking, but it was God’s will that made Gooden turned down the offer.

“Praying and fasting is a huge part of my life,” says Gooden. While visiting family in the Canary Islands in 2014 she began a seven-day prayer and fasting ritual from which she felt that God was directing her to move back to Michigan leaving behind the successful business she built in London, UK.

Never one to doubt her faith, Hellen packed her one suitcase, and with her son boarded a plane during one of the harshest winters on record in Michigan, she found an opportunity to work for La Mer Cosmetics at Nordstrom Department store in the cosmetics department and things began to change. It was a position she was poised and ready for, after being hired Hellen quickly took charge, she began nurturing and winning over both new and old clients, and within six months she took the annual earnings from a mere $49,000 to over $289,000 again creating another successful endeavor, but it wouldn’t last as jealousy and pettiness reared its ugly head.

I have heard this story so many times over the years especially for minority women and men who work long and hard to build up someone else’s business only to end up on the receiving end of a racist mindset and eventually being fired or quitting for made-up allegations due to a supervisor’s fear of losing their job.

Fate and faith almost always play out and the loss of that position actually opened up the next chapter of her business journey. Partnering up with her son James Gooden who formed Gooden Digital Marketing www.goodendigitalmarketing.com/ to help relaunch BellViso Global in Michigan and now it has become a resounding success with hundreds of clients and students from all over the country. BellaViso is the premier salon for airbrush, permanent make-up artistry, and microblading along with a training academy in the region. Thus fulfilling her mandate from God. SCENTS OF SUMMER

For summer 2020 we decided to comb through the vast arrays of fragrances in search of the perfect scent. One that best captures the auora and sensations this season brings. If you are someone who embraces change and doesn’t hold on to one scent we have a few to reccommend. What makes a great summer scent? First it’s always personal preference (of course) but chemically because the heat brings out scents on the body and often creates a stronger more pungent aroma. Lighter, fresher, airy elements tend to work best for the hotter months. Notes like citrus, berries and florals for women are prevelent especially of the simgle note varity. The best summer scents tend to hit lighter, fresher notes like the floowing. For men the notes are taken from the sea, lemon, orange, mint, lemon verbena, bergamot, pepper.
